Olurotimi John Badero is a Nigerian-American Physician, Interventional Cardiologist and Interventional Nephrologist who became the world's first and only Cardio-nephrologist (combined heart and kidney specialist).

Early life

Badero was born in Lagos, Southwestern Nigeria and is the seventh of nine children born to Chief Eliab Olufemi Badero and Stella Taiwo Badero. He hails from Isonyin-Ijebu in Ijebu North east area of Ogun State. His Grandfather, Joshua OluBadero Onasoga passed away 2 days before his father's 8-month birthday and his father would later change his last name to Badero .

Education and career

Badero attended St. Mary's Private School Lagos for his primary school education. He received his secondary school education at Federal Government College Odogbolu, Ogun State.

While at Federal Government College Odogbolu, he alongside 3 other students participated in and won the first National Young Scientists' Quiz competition in Nigeria in 1987.

He gained admission into Medical School at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Following medical school, he completed his internship year at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex at Ile-Ife.

He worked at General Hospital Isolo in Lagos to fulfill his one-year service requirement with the National Youth Service Corps. After this, he relocated to the United States where he completed three years of internal medicine residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Badero was accepted at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta where he completed a two-year fellowship training in nephrology and hypertension.

Badero returned to SUNY Downstate to complete a three-year fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine.

Following this, he attended the Yale School of Medicine where he completed a fellowship in invasive & interventional cardiology and another in peripheral vascular intervention. Badero then returned to SUNY Downstate for a year of fellowship training in interventional nephrology and dialysis access intervention.

Badero has featured in many magazines and articles including Jackson free press, Financial Nigeria International, My green gene magazine as well as Avantgarde Magazine talking about Cardio-nephrology and emphasizing the interrelationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). He has also appeared on many TV networks and radio interviews including BBC promoting cardiovascular and renal health awareness in the U.S and in developing countries.

Personal life

Badero lost his younger brother, Peter Olanrewaju Badero in his final year in medical school. He is the Assistant Pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Vine Chapel Church in Mississippi.
